“Frank Heindel of Mt. Pleasant is leading a small group of concerned citizens who are trying to audit the returns from the 2010 primary and general elections in South Carolina. Using computer technology, they are parsing the data from the audit files produced by the state’s ES&S voting system to evaluate how accurately the votes are counted and how well the voting terminals perform. He has put together a team that includes two professors of computer science from USC and Clemson and a programmer from Cambridge, MA. Mr. Heindel himself has spent about $500 on Freedom of Information Act requests to acquire audit records for the voting system from several SC counties, including Charleston and Colleton Counties.
